Humanity Reigns Supreme
Dec 28, 2011
By Ellen Diamond Prior to my "Schoolyard" role, I worked in a profession dependent on building strong client/donor relationships. With the move to a tech-focused industry, I assumed project focus would hover primarily on web capabilities, with human interactions playing a secondary or supporting role. Thankfully I had miscalculated - and not only because my fluency in geek only goes so far (I write that with utter respect for those with a facility for the language. Listen, I married a web developer!).
Within the past 10 months at Schoolyard, I have had the pleasure of working with numerous school representatives at a diverse smattering of schools across the country. Day schools, boarding schools, single sex schools, parochial schools, K-8, K-12, 9-12, urban schools , rural schools, schools with long, rich histories, and schools established within the last 20 years. As varied as the schools have been, so too have the individuals tasked with spearheading their respective school projects. Whether school administrators, trustees, and/or dedicated parent volunteers, each contributes their individual voice to the process, and listening to each is essential to the project's success.
It's not possible to mentally compile the number of client interactions we have over the course of a typical project (or a 14 week timeframe). The volume of phone-calls, emails, skype sessions, and in-person meetings is staggering, but every project is better for it. Each and every form of communication brings greater clarity, familiarity and appreciation, and if we're lucky, some good laughs too. Collectively, these interactions build a backbone of trust and mutual respect that guarantees successful Schoolyard launches and strong client relationships. And I will add, guarantees a pleasant work day for SY team members. Without diminishing the 'internal' conversations we have in the office, we really enjoy talking with all of you!
Here's to another great year of communicating - in whichever medium works best!
