Working at Schoolyard

Schoolyard is a desirable place to work.

We offer competitive salaries and comprehensive benefit packages including Blue Cross, Delta Dental, supplemental disability insurance, and a 401K plan. Our health and dental plans provide a percentage of individual and family coverage, with such coverage extended to households headed by same-sex partners.

Recognizing that team members work best when they are creatively stimulated, all Schoolyard employees are encouraged to take continuing education classes at local colleges in any discipline of their choosing, with the cost of such classes assumed by Schoolyard. We have had programmers study figure painting at RISD and designers study html at NETech.

Our Providence office is in the Corliss Landing building (1835) on the historic Providence waterfront. We hold extremely high expectations of our team members and in return we create the best work environment imaginable.

We currently seek the perfect match for the following positions:

  • Drupal Technician
  • Graphic Designer

Drupal Technician

Schoolyard has developed a school-specific CMS using the Drupal core and assorted Drupal modules. We have established features, roles, and workflow in a manner that is directly informed by various user experiences within schools. We seek an experienced Drupal technician to install, integrate, and deploy this system in our new client sites. Under the direction of our Senior Drupal Platform Architect, this position is generally focused on installation, production and implementation of new features (upcoming: mobile interface options and Apache SOLR integration). Additionally,  this position will include some routine support of existing clients. Understanding of basic graphic design concepts is an essential secondary requirement for this position. We are a highly integrated team and tend to work in a very iterative fashion. We believe that real designers code, and real developers should likewise understand the importance of design. It should be noted that whereas we have listed "Deep understanding of Drupal" as a prerequisite for this position, we will consider a candidate strong in other areas with a commitment toward learning Drupal as a qualification for hire.

A list of additional basic requirements includes:

  • Deep understanding of Drupal
  • Strong knowledge of CSS, HTML / XHTML
  • Experience with Apache, MySQL, PHP, (LAMP/XAMP/MAMP)
  • Demonstrated expertise with current Web Standards-based development
  • Familiarity with independent schools beneficial though not required
  • Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated writing proficiency

If you're looking for an opportunity to grow and work in a fun, creative, modern, and challenging environment, we'd love to hear from you. Please be sure to let us know how and where to see your work.

Graphic Designer for web; rock solid in CSS, HTML;  comfortable with PHP

Requirements: We seek a graphic designer for web with a high level of proficiency in CSS and HTML. Candidates who can demonstrate familiarity with PHP will be at an advantage. The person who fills this position will either have experience theming in Drupal, or will be able to demonstrate an ability to learn Drupal theming quickly.

Details: Our independent school clients share a universal goal of having their unique school culture portrayed online. Working with our Senior Creative Director, the Graphic Designer leads the effort in developing solutions that meet this goal. On paper many schools sound the same--their mission statements, graduation requirements, and programs are often indistinguishable from one school to the next. In truth, however, our clients are very different from one another, whether they are across town or around the world. As a primary team member during the discovery phase of each project, the Graphic Designer's goal from the outset of each project is to identify and focus on those attributes that make a particular school unique, and to create an aesthetic approach that speaks to these attributes. Insofar as our creative team members often communicate directly with our clients via email, we expect our designers to have a reasonably strong command of standard written English.
